David Goitia
Goitía is considered part of Puerto Rico’s “Generación del cincuenta” — a group of artists from the 1950s who had a major influence on shaping the visual culture of the island. He first studied with maestro Juan Rosado and later with the Italian painter Nino Sparacino and the Spanish artist Carlos Marichal, who welcomed him into their graphic arts workshop at the University of Puerto Rico as a special student. In 1956 he became artistic director of WAPA TV, and in 1958 received a scholarship from the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture (ICP) to study mural painting and graphic arts in Mexico. There he trained at the School of Applied Arts with masters Anguiano, Ocampo, and the Machado brothers, while also assisting González Camarena on a mural project. After returning to Puerto Rico, he taught at the ICP School of Visual Arts. His work with the ICP Theater Program produced an outstanding series of posters for both the Puerto Rican Theater Festival and the International Theater Festival.
Goitía’s art often engaged with Puerto Rican culture, identity, and arts institutions — through his teaching, through institutional work, through graphic arts.
