Alfonso Arana

Displaying a keen passion for drawing and painting from an early age, he honed his skills under the tutelage of Viennese teacher Franz Howanietz.

Born in New York, Alfonso Meléndez Arana's artistic journey took root when his family relocated to San Sebastián, Puerto Rico, at the age of four. In 1943, he ventured to Mexico to pursue art studies, balancing his high school education with mentorship under painter José Bardasano. Following a brief stint at the Manhattan School of Arts in 1947, he earned a scholarship from the Puerto Rican government, propelling him to Paris where he delved into the School of Fine Arts and the Julien Academy (1947-1951).

Returning to Puerto Rico in 1954, he showcased his art in various galleries across the island. Alfonso Meléndez Arana obtained his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) in 1961, subsequently joining the institution as an arts professor in its Extension Division in 1962. Noteworthy exhibitions at the UPR Museum in 1963 and 1966 marked milestones in his career. Establishing his official residence in Paris in 1972, he founded the Arana Foundation in 1986, providing scholarships to talented Puerto Rican artists to nurture their craft in his workshop.

Recognizing his significant contributions to the arts and mentorship of young talent, the French government honored him with the Medal Knight of Honor of the Arts and Sciences in 2001. Alfonso Meléndez Arana's artistic legacy extends through numerous exhibitions both locally and internationally, showcasing his enduring impact on the art world.
