Created for the 150th anniversary of Eugenio María de Hostos’s birth, this poster honors one of Puerto Rico’s greatest philosophers, abolitionists, and educators. Commissioned for the Sala Eugenio M. de Hostos at the Biblioteca General de Puerto Rico, the piece is part of a major cultural campaign organized by the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña (ICP) in 1989. This was a milestone year in which Hostos’s contributions to education reform, women’s rights, and Antillean confederation were revisited through exhibitions, publications, and academic conferences across Puerto Rico and Latin America.
Luis Alonso’s design adopts an abstract interpretation of Hostos’s profile, dissolving into layered marks that symbolize intellectual depth and transformation. The poster’s surrounding fish-like symbols are actually the carribean islands, Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico — metaphors for Hostos’s far-reaching influence across the Caribbean and the Americas. This modern graphic approach reflects a mature period in Puerto Rican poster art where serigraphy was used not only for visual communication but also for honoring national identity and intellectual heritage.
