This exhibition poster commemorates the 150th anniversary of Eugenio María de Hostos (1839–1989), one of Puerto Rico’s most influential intellectuals, educators, and advocates for Antillean unity. Hosted at the City University of New York, the show highlighted Hostos’s life and work in the diaspora, emphasizing his impact across Latin America, the Dominican Republic, Chile, and the United States. The poster’s use of vibrant colors and strong geometric framing reflects the cultural pride surrounding Hostos’s sesquicentennial, a moment when Puerto Rican institutions worldwide organized tributes to reaffirm his place in the history of education and social reform.
Luis Alonso’s design incorporates a dignified portrait of Hostos beneath a symbolic rising sun motif, representing enlightenment and the intellectual awakening Hostos championed. The lower section, depicting a stylized audience, references Hostos’s lifelong commitment to public education and civic engagement. This poster is part of a broader tradition in Puerto Rican graphic arts of commemorating national heroes through silkscreened serigraphy, reinforcing the importance of Hostos’s legacy as “El Ciudadano de América” and “El Maestro de América.”
