Francisco Rodón, Exposición, Cristóbal Ruiz

$2,311.35

This poster announces the Posthumous Tribute Exhibition: Paintings by Cristóbal Ruiz, presented at the Museum of the University of Puerto Rico from September 14 through September 28, 1962. The exhibition brought together 20 works by the Spanish painter and educator shortly after his death that same year. The poster is based on one of Ruiz’s self-portraits, with his signature incorporated across the chest, giving the design an intimate and memorial character.

Cristóbal Ruiz (1881–1962) was born in Villacarrillo, in Andalusia, Spain, and received artistic training in Córdoba, Madrid, and Paris. His studies included work at the Academia de San Fernando and the Académie Julian, and he later developed a distinguished career as both painter and educator. Ruiz taught at institutions including the School of Arts and Crafts in Úbeda, the Higher School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving in Madrid, and the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. He also served in positions connected with the preservation of Spain’s artistic heritage.

Ruiz later became a resident artist at the University of Puerto Rico, establishing an important connection between his European artistic background and Puerto Rico’s developing university arts community. His presence at the university contributed to the exchange of artistic ideas and to the growth of institutional support for painting and art education on the island.

The 1962 memorial exhibition served both as a tribute to Ruiz’s career and as a record of his relationship with the University of Puerto Rico. Its catalog included black-and-white photographs of the works on display, while the catalog, invitation, and exhibition brochure are preserved at the Puerto Rican Art Documentation Center of the Museo de Historia, Antropología y Arte, providing valuable archival documentation of the exhibition and the artist’s legacy.
