Luis Alonso

He's a multi-talented artist—a printmaker, designer, and painter—who honed his skills at the School of Visual Arts of San Juan from 1969 to 1973.

Joining the Printmaking Workshop of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture ("ICP") in 1971, under Lorenzo Homar's guidance, marked a pivotal moment in his artistic journey. Throughout his career, he's been an active participant in various group workshops like "Grupo Guajana," "Taller Achiote," and "Taller Bija." His artistic prowess shines through in the posters he's crafted for the ICP, the Cultural Activities Program of the University of Puerto Rico, and other cultural institutions.

His artistic footprint extends beyond Puerto Rico, having showcased his works at prestigious events like the Havana Biennial (1984, 1986), the Biennial of Latin American Printmaking in New York (1986), and multiple editions of the Biennial of Latin American and Caribbean Printmaking. Notably, his talents have been recognized by the esteemed "Revista Sin Nombre" of San Juan, which awarded him the First Prize for Printmaking in 1976 and 1977.

His art is a blend of literary inspiration and political conviction, evident in his support for Puerto Rican independence. This thematic richness is mirrored in his formal techniques, where he deftly employs design element repetition, vibrant color palettes, and textured crayon finishes in his prints.
