Eugenio Maria de Hostos

His ideas left a lasting impact on Puerto Rican society, inspiring generations of educators, artists, and activists.

Eugenio María de Hostos (1839–1903) was a Puerto Rican educator, philosopher, writer, and social reformer, often called “El Ciudadano de América” (The Citizen of the Americas) for his vision of Latin American unity and social justice. He championed education as a tool for progress, promoted women’s rights, and advocated for Puerto Rico’s self-determination.

Hostos has also been a popular subject in Puerto Rican visual arts, particularly in printmaking. Graphic artists have commemorated him through prints that highlight his intellectual legacy and symbolic role in Puerto Rican history.

Many of these prints were produced in workshops influenced by DivEdCo and the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, where silkscreen and lithography techniques allowed artists to create works for both public education and private collection. They served not only as homage to Hostos but also as tools to inspire civic pride and social consciousness among Puerto Ricans.
